The Miami Dolphins are going to be without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa until at least Week 8 as he recovers from the third diagnosed concussion of his professional career. Whether or not he comes back at all is still in question, and Tagovailoa has been meeting with concussion specialists and there’s still no set timetable for his return.
To further complicate the situation at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was disappointing in his first start last week against the Seattle Seahawks. Thompson was 13-of-19 for just 107 yards on the day with an abysmal QBR of just 8.1. To add injury to insult, Thompson was also knocked out of the game with a “painful rib injury” and the team has called him ‘day-to-day’ with a chest injury.
The calls for the Dolphins to make a move at the quarterback position came almost immediately upon Tagovailoa’s concussion on Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills. Those cries have only gotten louder in light of the Dolphins’ backup performing poorly and suffering an injury of his own. Many have linked the Dolphins to a number of different options – including some linking them to their former quarterback, Ryan Tannehill. Bleacher Report NFL analyst Kristopher Knox has gotten in on the action, linking Miami to a former Super Bowl champion at the position.
In his latest look at the best players potentially available on the NFL’s trade block, and their potential suitors, Knox has paired the Dolphins with current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and former Super Bowl champion with the Seahawks, Russell Wilson. Wilson had a rough swing the past two seasons in Denver, but was able to win the starting job in Pittsburgh coming into the season.
Wilson suffered a calf injury prior to the start of the regular season, and has yet to take the field for the Steelers. Former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has taken over the starting job in Wilson’s absence, and has looked good through the first three weeks, prompting many to suggest that Wilson could be on the outs in Pittsburgh.
If the Steelers are comfortable moving forward with Fields, they could find themselves in a position where Wilson wants an opportunity to play somewhere else and demands a trade. If Tagovailoa is going to be on the shelf for the Dolphins beyond that Week 8 mark, they could give Wilson the opportunity he’s looking for. Wilson may not be the quarterback he once was with the Seahawks, but he still has the skill set to thrive in Mike McDaniel’s quick-hitting offense, and the speed of Tyreek Hill would play to Wilson’s deep-ball strengths.
